"When it rains, get wet." -Quincy JonesEver get afraid of the rain.. ever walk with a bit of fear of getting wet? This idea of rain.. in a spiritual sense.. can be a difficult one.. it can dial you back to a difficult and painful time of rain and cause you to be fearful of future rain. It causes me to think about Jesus' statement from Matthew 5:
He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Rain can often represent difficult days for us.. times of testing and trial. During times of rain it is so easy to get our spiritual umbrellas out and 'protect' ourselves from the full effect of the rain. Often we will use the umbrellas of withdrawal.. of manipulation.. and of passivity to protect ourselves from the effects of the rain.During times of rain I think that it good to remember that God's rains are necessary for growth.. they are good for us.. really.. ever heard of a farmer running through his crops with an umbrella.. funny picture isn't it. When we are tempted to open up those spiritual umbrellas we need to remember what Quincy Jones says:
"When it rains, get wet"Do you have any spiritual umbrellas? Care to share about them and what has helped you to keep them in the closet?
This is very good, Bob. It applies in so many ways. In a world that spends millions masking symptoms and covering blemishes, we all need to get a little wet. Perhaps we need to put away the umbrellas and just let the rain wash away all our pretenses. We see ourselves and one another differently, that's for sure.

ReplyDeleteSo often in our attempt to pull out the umbrellas we find they have big holes in them. Consequently we do not stay dry, nor do we get the benefit of the rain, and our situation is all the worse.

Well, if you consider what God wills to be the rain, or the sun, or the fog, or the earthquake, then you should "get wet" in that you should accept His Will for your being in the situation.
ReplyDeleteLiving fully in His Will is not supposed to be easy. Thankfully, He gave us His Cross and invited us to take up our own.
